How does a microphone work?
We have already discussed that microphones are a device that converts sound energy into electrical energy. It was also stated earlier that microphones can be termed as reverse loudspeakers. The coil is in back and forth motion and as it moves through the magnetic field that is created by the permanent magnet, an electric current flows through the coil. This electric current or electric energy is then transmitted to a recording device or an amplifier and here you go, you have successfully converted the sound energy into electrical energy. What are the types of microphones?
Microphones are mainly available in two different types; Dynamic microphones and Condenser microphones. Both of these types of microphones have different uses and applications.
Do not be fooled by this word i.e. dynamic because this word or term can have real diversified meanings when it relates to music or sound. Here we are not talking about the range or the performance being dynamic. Here the term dynamic relates to the working mechanism of the microphone that is present in a dynamic microphone.

The ribbon mics are known to be bidirectional i.e. they only pick up sound waves that come from the front and back and the sound waves coming from the sides are neglected by these microphones. The condenser microphones are famous for extremely flat frequency response and also for their sensitivity at the same time. The biggest application of these mics is the audio recording. The microphone is a device that converts your sound into an electrical signal. There are around 10 types of microphones, but well only concentrate on the ones that are subjected as vocal microphones. So lets get started what each type of microphone serves.
Condenser microphones are also known as electrostatic or capacitor microphones. In these microphones, the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor and vibrations cause distances between the plates thus producing an electrical signal.
There are three roots of condenser microphones depending on the extraction of audio signal from the transducer.
In DC-biased microphones, the plates are biased with a fixed charge, the voltages across the capacitor plates changes with the vibrations in the air. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between them for a parallel-plate capacitor. A constant charge is created on the capacitor, as the capacitance changes the charge across the capacitor also changes but slightly. The capacitance of the plates and the value of bias resistor form a filter that high-passes for the audio signal and low-passes for the bias voltage. In between the time-frame of capacitance change, the charge is practically constant and the voltage across the capacitor changes quickly to reflect the change in capacitance. The voltage across the capacitor differs above and below the bias voltage. The difference between bias and the capacitor is seen across the series resistor. For performances or recording music the voltage across the resistor is amplified.
In RF condenser microphones a low RF voltage is generated by a low-noise oscillator. Demodulation yields a low-noise audio frequency signal with a low impedance. Low bias voltage allows the use of a diaphragm with looser tension which is used to produce wider frequency response due to high compliance. RF biasing process results in a lower electrical impedance capsule which is a useful by-product through which these microphones can be used in bad weather conditions. An electret condenser uses a permanent external charge in an electret material, unlike the above condenser microphones. An electret is a ferroelectric material that has been permanently charged. A static charge is assigned to electret by aligning the static charges in the material, likewise, a magnet is made by aligning the magnetic domains. They are affordable and can be manufactured easily, the vast majority of vocal microphones are made by it.
These microphones are mostly used in performing on-stage because of their potentially high gain before feedback. They are also known as moving coil microphones. They work by the electromagnetic induction. Dynamic microphones are affordable and can resist moisture.
A small movable induction coil is positioned in between the magnetic field on a permanent magnet which is stretched to the diaphragm. When the sound enters the microphone the sound waves causes the diaphragm to move. This causes the coil to move is the magnetic field thus producing a varying current through electromagnetic induction.
These days more than one membrane is used in dynamic microphones because a single membrane cannot respond to all audio frequencies. Combing membrane layers in a correct way are hard, microphone companies that design these type of microphones tend to be more expensive.
Ribbon microphones use a thin metal ribbon attached to the magnetic field. This ribbon is connected electrically to microphones output; its vibration in the magnetic field causes an electrical signal. Ribbon and dynamic headphones use same phenomena of magnetic induction.
The basic type of ribbon microphones uses the bi-directional pattern to detect the sound as the ribbon is open on both sides. As the ribbon is light-weighted it responds to the air velocity rather than that to the sound pressure. These are pattern are also known as crossed figure 8 which are gaining a quite well market popularity in a stereo recording.
Another type of ribbon microphones uses different directional patterns, in these patterns one side of the ribbon is enclosed in an acoustic trap or baffle which allows the sound to only reach one side.
Modern ribbon materials eliminate those concerns making ribbon fragile while loosed up. They dynamic range is relatively improved even at low frequencies.
Carbon microphones use a button that contains carbon granules which are pressed between two metal plates. When a voltage is applied across the metal plates, it causes a small current to flow through carbon. The diaphragm and one plate vibrate along with the incident sound waves applying a diverse pressure to the carbon. The varying pressure deforms the granules which cause the contact area between adjacent pairs of granules to change, thus this results in electrical resistance of the mass of granules to change. This causes the change is currently flowing through microphone resulting in producing an electrical signal.
These microphones are mostly used in telephones as they have a limited about of frequency response range and low-quality sound. Similarly, theses microphones can be used as an amplifier to use a small amount of energy for controlling a larger electrical energy. They were used as an amplifier in old telephone repeaters for making long-distance calls possible.
These types of microphones are relying on the ability of some materials which produces a voltage when applied pressure. These microphones are used to amplify sound from acoustic musical instruments, like sensing drum hits, recording sound in challenging environments such as underwater. These types of microphones use a mechanical coupling to pick up vibration.
A pattern indicates us how a microphone would react to the sounds approaching at different angles about its central axis. There are around 7 types of patterns but well only outline the main patterns used in vocal microphones.
This patterns response is considered to be a perfect sphere in three dimensions. But as with the directional microphone, the pattern of the omnidirectional microphone is a function of frequency. The body of the microphone gets in its own way of the sound arriving from the rear causing a slight flattening in polar response. The flattening increases when the diameter reaches wavelength of the frequency.
So we can conclude that microphones with the smallest diameter give the best omnidirectional patterns at higher frequencies.
Unlike omnidirectional pattern, unidirectional patterns are only sensitive to sounds coming from one direction. Unidirectional pattern includes four types:
The name Cardioid is suggested by the heart-shaped pattern. These patterns are used in the microphones for vocal or speech because they reject sounds from different directions. Similarly, cardioid patterns reduce pickup from side and rear which helps to knock down the feedback coming from monitors. The patterns are achieved by sensing pressure and gradient, so putting them near to sound source outputs a bass boost due to increased gradient. Cardioid patterns cancel the sound waves coming from the back by outputting a negative signal from figure-8 which cancels the positive signal from the omnidirectional element. The sound coming from the front is added to each other.
These patterns are same like that of cardioid but have a larger figure 8, which helps to achieve a tighter area of front sensitivity and a smaller lobe of rear sensitivity.
Super-cardioid patterns are same like hyper cardioids but they have a more front pickup and less rear pickup. Specifications state that hyper cardioids produce nulls at 109.5 by a combining ratio of 3:1 whereas super cardioids produce nulls as 126.9 by a combining ratio of 5:3.
These patterns have no null points; they have a combining ratio of about 7:3 with 3-10 dB level between the front and the back pickup.
