The Cathode Ray Syndrome* is a mysterious band with an unnecessary asterisk in their name. In trying to find out more about them at their website (http://www.waragainstcliche.com) the only thing they would divulge was that there are four members who practice by telepathy and come together only to play concerts. Umm…okay. The only other thing I found was that their latest E.P. Argh is their third release and after listening to it, it sounds like the telepathy is working.
Argh is a four-track instrumental movement that at times sounds like A Perfect Circle (especially on the opening track "Mexicanism") and at times sounds like early Radiohead, like on the heavy "New Rock."
The only quibble that I have with the record is that the tracks don’t end so much as they get cut off. The track will be approaching the end and then it stops and the next song immediately begins. I know it’s a minor thing, but I had to keep checking my CD player to make sure that it wasn’t skipping.
Argh is a good E.P. for those who like instrumental rock and for those who are fans of darker rock, like anything that Maynard James Keenan has been or is involved with. The Cathode Ray Syndrome* may be a strange band, but they have put together a pretty decent record.
