Album Review: Last Night All My Dreams Came True by Wild Beasts

Over their too-brief lifespan, Kendal quartet Wild Beasts traced an intriguingly unique arc in lewd, lavish intelli-pop. Though they began as esoteric, falsetto-pop curios, they soon steered their filthier instincts into groove-sodden turf, taking a fascination with sex and feckless masculinity to logical extremes. With the quartet splitting, what impresses most about this recorded-live retrospective is how smoothly the diffuse points on their timeline merge in one singular, saucy, self-aware narrative.

Well, since Wild Beasts released what was quite easily their strongest album in 2016 with Boy King, there was no way they were going to toy with attempting to better it. Instead, they're celebrating. Last Night All My Dreams Came True is a live studio record that takes elements from across their career and puts them in the environment that best shows off their frighteningly impressive skills as musicians.

While it may not be the last will and testament fans might have hoped for, Wild Beasts's supposed swan song, Last Night All My Dreams Came True, stands as a fitting capstone to the band's canon. Rather than write a new album's worth of material, Wild Beasts recorded new studio performances of their best-loved songs, played with more muscle and immediacy than before. As such, the album serves as a satisfying roundup of their greatest hits while also shifting the focus from the group's lush arrangements and skilled studio craft to their chemistry as a live band.
