Transcendent as Walls' brand of sunrise Krautrock has sometimes been ("Burnt Sienna," "Raw Umber"), such slow, gauzy music is only one dimension of the duo's sound. Live, they've always been far more muscular, drawing on various influences from early modern dance music: Italo disco, EBM, even Chicago house. In their slightly stiff way, there has always been a jacking side to Walls that's gone largely overlooked.Until now, that is.
This third and seemingly final album by WALLS is released by an off-shoot of German electronica label Kompakt and has been mastered by Sonic Boom (ex-Spacemen 3). It slides into a position somewhere equidistant from the two houses: kosmische sounds balanced with droplets of acid and chugging electronic disco. The title of the album neatly summarises the resultant feel, craggy and imposing, the mountains looming even while you walk through the valleys below.
