As indie rock's resident wunderkind, Ty Segall continues to release music at an alarming clip, barely allowing time for the masses to exhale between the onset of new projects. But the appropriately titled Fudge Sandwich is sort of a curious outlier, one that promises a mystifying and eclectic tapestry of both reworked and reimagined songs, ranging from John Lennon and Neil Young to Funkadelic and The Grateful Dead. Flourishing in the manic-minded Segall fold, the project aims to be much more than a conventional scattershot of covers however - one that seeks to dramatically overhaul each iteration down to every rollicking contour so that the original bares at best slight, passing traces of minuscule resemblance.
Here's Ty Segall, American fuzz-lord extraordinaire, serving up a record of covers sweetly named Fudge Sandwich. You can safely assume you're in for a treat with Segall, who constantly churns out record after record, always trying something new along the way, and rarely (if ever) drops the ball. This time around, he's put together his take on 11 favourites, complete with plenty of signature squeals and delectable guitar tones. No stranger to covers — recall his delightful take on Hot Chocolate's "Every 1's a Winner" from Freedom ….
When an artist who usually records their own material decides to release a set of covers, it often means that they've run short on ideas and inspiration. That hardly seems to be the case with Ty Segall, who was relentlessly prolific in 2018; Fudge Sandwich, in which he bends 11 tunes by 11 artists to his creative will, is one of five albums he released that year. But if Segall wanted to take on other people's tunes for a change, Fudge Sandwich shows he can do so and put the firm stamp of his personality on each of them.
The latest full-length effort from California garage-rocker Ty Segall is an album of covers, but they aren't so much as Ty having his own unique take on each song as it is him completely breaking the track apart, down to its bare foundations, and piecing the disassembled elements together slowly from absolute scratch. As a musician, Ty is an ever-changing shape-shifter of an artist, constantly evolving through different genres and elements of music. The most beloved Ty, arguably, is garage-rock Ty - encapsulated in his classic studio album effort 'Melted' which is a cacophony of distorted guitars and surfy melodies set against groovy handclaps - but since then, the California native has picked up the influences of psych-rock, punk, experimental rock and everything in between.
In a particularly prolific year for Ty Segall (which really is saying a lot), Fudge Sandwich may be, in the light of his understated release of Orange Rainbow just the week prior, his sixth release of 2018. And yet, he doesn't sound remotely exhausted - if anything he's spurred more into rewarding his fans with even more material, this time with a subtly intimate slant. Here's another solid collection of tracks, with Segall recording "a covers album of songs he loves" for our enjoyment.
