How the Music Critic Score works
One of dance music's original prime movers, and the producer of Screamadelica, Andrew Weatherall long ago forswore the superstar DJ circuit in favour of subterranean electro manoeuvres with fellow lone swordsman Keith Tenniswood. From the Double Gone Chapel is the duo's most arresting album yet, introducing live instruments, songwriting and Weatherall's own deadpan vocals to their murky electronic brew. The result has the same backstreet menace and flashes of poignancy as Haunted Dancehall, Weatherall's 1994 masterpiece with Sabres of Paradise: shards of Joy Division guitar crisscross punk-funk basslines and mournful electro shivers.
