Album Review: Tender Opposites by TOPS

Fairly Good, Based on 3 Critics

New Musical Express (NME) - 60
Based on rating 3/5

We all love maple syrup, but imagine a world where supermarkets sell only maple syrup. You’re round your nan’s for tea but the fridge is bare, because she’s gone syrup mad and is guzzling it straight from the bottle. Obviously, this is not ideal. Montreal DIY pop is currently experiencing a particularly fertile moment, and TOPS seem poised to be the latest breakout. Like Arbutus labelmates Grimes, Blue Hawaii and Sean Nicholas Savage, the band makes strange, beguiling pop music that sounds simultaneously inviting, off-kilter and familiar. But it’s hard to hate them when they make pop as gorgeous as this.
