Album Review: Gigi's Recovery by The Murder Capital

Exceptionally Good, Based on 5 Critics

No Ripcord - 90

After their 2019 debut, When I Have Fears, the Murder Capital saw how the forces of change began to break through. The Dublin quintet's more austere look into grief, relating to a friend's suicide, came together in nine months, but it must've been the equivalent of a lifetime, as frontman James McGovern poured every emotion he had to give until he couldn't. Dublin post-punk quintet The Murder Capital are back with an exhilarating second record. Unlike their 2019 debut album, When I Have Fears, which was conceived in a matter of months, the follow-up, produced by John Congleton, has had a much longer gestation period of almost two years. While The Murder Capital's first effort had moments reminiscent of Fontaines D.C.'s sardonic sense of melancholy, these were interposed with a wider range of styles.

On the follow-up to When I Have Fears, the pitfalls, the purity and the piousness of recovery make the case that to survive, we have to grow Get out your discords and reckless abandon, backcomb your hair and plunge into the velvet night in search of your one-true-love Nick Cave! Because The Murder Capital are back, for the first time since the fireworks of their triumphant 2019 album When I Have Fears. In 2019, Ireland’s The Murder Capital were everywhere. With five star reviews and a sell-out tour, they could do no wrong.
