Arriving seven years after their inspired a capella album Rant and nearly a decade after The Chaos, the Futureheads' turbulent sixth album, Powers, reflects the changes in the band's lives -- and the world to which they returned -- perfectly. During the group's hiatus, vocalist/guitarist Barry Hyde dealt with his mental health issues (which he also addressed on his 2016 solo album, Malody); meanwhile, the political climate of the U.K. only grew more unstable and polarized.
Of all the dance-punk acts of the mid-'00s, it seemed as if the Futureheads ended up being the ones who just couldn't move forward; eight years after their celebrated self-titled 2004 debut, the quartet shook things up with their a cappella experiment, Rant, then disbanded.
