Stephin Merritt (usually aka Magnetic Fields) has long been beavering away on the US underground; since the release of 69 Love Songs, though, he seems to be threatening a Flaming Lips-like supernova. His prospects won't be harmed by this soundtrack to Peter Hedges' film Pieces of April, which confirms Merritt as the most exciting dissector of modern love around. Alongside gems from the back catalogue, four new songs suggest Merritt may not even have peaked.
