Chicago-based indie-rock four-piece Slow Pulp provide this in abundance with their debut Moveys. Crafted through lead singer Emily Massey's own personal health struggles, her parents being involved in a car crash and a worldwide pandemic, it is an album led by emotion, tinged with a sense of self-growth. Througout, we can see directly into the enigmatic and hazy mind of Massey.
Tragic circumstances are imprinted all over Chicago outfit Slow Pulp's debut Moveys. In fact, the album isn't even the album originally intended for release, the original plan biting the dust so a series of life-changing events could capture the correct mood. Written whilst touring with Alex G, the first effort was scrapped and completely rewritten when singer Emily Massey saw an answer to her perpetual tiredness explained to her, doctors diagnosing her with both Lyme disease and a chronic mono.
The full-length debut of a band from Chicago by way of Madison, Wisconsin, Moveys follows a series of EPs that documented a major transformation for the group. Founded by childhood friends Henry Stoehr (guitar), Alexander Leeds (bass), and Theodore Mathews (drums), Slow Pulp made Emily Massey their lead singer only after she contributed guitar and backing vocals to their second EP, 2017s EP2. Their third extended play and first as a four-piece, Big Day, led to a tour with Alex G and record deal with Winspear.
