Following their acclaimed trilogy that launched the anonymous collective into metal stardom, Sleep Token take an ambitious leap with Even in Arcadia. Still rooted in metal, the masked band venture fearlessly into techno, R'n'B, pop, and even rap territory. These diverse influences are woven throughout the album, creating something distinctly their own - though it makes pinning down a single genre almost impossible.
double take on my cash flow (emotional) There's a lot to Sleep Token, but if we're being honest, there really isn't much of anything to Sleep Token. Big release campaigns, bigger masks for anonymity's (but mostly edginess') sake, and deeply desperate attempts at co-opting the language of cultism to, uh, foster community, I guess? All of this is cool, and makes sense when you actually listen to the music the band has been cranking out for quite a few years now. Sleep Token love taking disparate genres of music and stuffing them into the same song, without ever attempting to make any part of this song sound… interesting.
High achieving, chart-topping, grand creators of mystique, it is hard to think of pressing bucket list items for Sleep Token, significant accolades they still ought to tick off. The alternative metal band's latest studio effort 'Even In Arcadia' is an absorbing listen. Partly introducing unused genre territory to the group's body of work yet distilling what's already there, it highlights the ability to reflect as well looking ahead.
