Skyzoo is a unique talent. The Brooklyn emcee honed his skills on the mixtape circuit starting in the early 2000s before signing on with Duck Down in 2009. His catalog is extensive, laden with collaboration albums with popular producers, from 9th Wonder to Illmind. The solo studio endeavors, however, have been less frequent; an impressive feat considering his level of respect and dedicated cult following.
At this point, Brooklyn MC Skyzoo is considered a veteran who is now associated with delivering a dependable, assured and almost predictable dose of beats and rhymes. On "Civilized Leisure," Sky seems to be aware of this perception, rhyming "They say 'Sky, your story don't ever change up' / It never will, it's everything that I say it was / Forever will be centred on how we came up. " Focusing on his immediate circle of acquaintances as the album title suggests could have backfired and delivered a blinkered and misguided project.
Since his big break in 2006 with the collaborative EP Cloud 9: The 3 Day High with 9th Wonder, Skyzoo has established himself as respectable MC in the independent scene. His countless mixtapes and critically-acclaimed albums have earned the Brooklyn MC co-signs from the biggest names in the underground and a chance to tour the world. After connecting with fellow Brooklyn native Torae on on his last release, 2014’s Barrel Brothers, Skyzoo is back and ready to take listeners down memory lane with his nostalgic project, Music For My Friends.
