Great, Based on 4 Critics

Rolling Stone - 100
Based on rating 5/5

Chicago rapper Serengeti has a refreshingly deadpan outlook: "Cold" calls out scrubs in their thirties, "still wearing jerseys." On his latest disc, producers Jel and Odd Nosdam drop furious record scratches and stand-up-bass samples into their thorny, old-school beats, and Serengeti's drawling, pregnant-pause- filled flow is one to remember. Serengeti is a man who likes to wear masks. Earlier this year he donned his favorite disguise for a fourth time on an EP, rapping from the perspective of the titular dumpy Chicago mook named Kenny Dennis who loves brats, the Bears, and the Bulls, and who would kill to spend some time with Brian Dennehy. Opinion: Excellent

Chicago’s hip-hop scene has seen better days. Kanye is out tweeting about his hatred for khaki shorts, Common has split his time between having hilarious beefs with Drake and making bizarre cameos in romantic comedies and Happy Feet Two, and Lupe Fiasco is still recovering from Lasers, a glossy, over-produced slice of corporate rap that was lukewarm at best. These days, California and New York have reclaimed the crown from the Windy City (So much for watching the throne), and aside from the wacky antics of Detroit native Danny Brown and all-star Minneapolis collective Doomtree, the Midwest has been pretty dead lately. There’s no better timing, then, for C.A.R., the stellar new LP from Chi-Town rapper Serengeti.
