Album Review: Have You Considered Punk Music by Self Defense Family

Ageing is an inevitable process, but the ways in which we adapt to it is completely individual. At least, that seems the primary concern of Self Defense Family frontman Patrick Kinlon's on their latest record, the excellently titled Have You Considered Punk Music?. The question in the album title is, sort of, addressed in the song of the same name, expressing how punk music is Kinlon and many others' way of life, even if the snot-nosed idealism of the youth culture has long since passed.

Self Defense Family have made a career -- or at very least a successful ongoing art project -- out of questioning the accepted notions of what punk rock is supposed to be. They play smart, challenging, thought-provoking music without buying into the fast/loud template that generally signifies punk in the ears of most listeners. So when they titled their 2018 album Have You Considered Punk Music, it plays like a statement that could mean any number of things.
Opinion: Excellent
Have You Considered Punk Music. Part question, part sales pitch, part random thought - the perfect amalgamation of Self Defense Family's new album. Their first proper full length since 2015's Heaven Is Earth, Punk Music captures the band's evolution while also creating something completely new to them. Self Defense Family, composed of musicians who have on and off contributed to the group over the last eight years, are quite possibly the most prolific band in punk music.
