Chicago footwork godfather RP Boo's career spans over 30 years, though for years his work had inexplicably been confined to smaller white labels and self-releases. Reissues of his archival material have opened him up to broader audiences and due recognition, and Boo's next task is to continue to empty his mind, say what needs to be said, and bequeath himself to his listeners. Some artists spend so much time inside their heads that listening to their music is like peering through a telescope into some fully formed internal universe. Pioneering footwork producer RP Boo is one of those artists. Listening to his albums, you get a sense of him as a kind of reclusive genius inventor, arriving at his own unmistakable sound by descending steadily into a self-referential spiral.

Planet Mu has released several full-lengths and EPs by footwork originator RP Boo, but I'll Tell You What! is the first to be recorded as a proper album, as the others collected tracks dating back to the '90s. Essentially, the tracks on this album aren't too different than the ones on his older releases, but his style is still so advanced that most of the world hasn't caught up yet, so it doesn't sound like he's repeating himself. There are some noticeable progressions, however.

RP Boo has got death on his mind. In his introduction to I'll Tell You What!--astoundingly, the first album of all new material from the legendary footwork producer--Boo says he wants to "die empty," purging his musical mind in order to have left no idea unexplored when the Grim Reaper comes calling. That sense of urgency drives I'll Tell You What!, an album that pushes at the edge of what footwork can be--a footwork record that clings to the genre by mysterious means, questioning where the limits lie.
