Roddy Ricch released one of the most dominant rap debuts of the past decade in 2019. Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 charts and stayed there for four weeks. The defining single "The BOX,” took over the charts for so long, both Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez actively campaigned to try and unseat him. The "ee-er" will forever be burnt in fans’ collective psyches.
Roddy Ricch's uncanny ability to blend in with almost any style of rap is his calling card, for better or worse. Being able to get in where you fit in is great for variety. But there's always the risk of the music becoming indistinct, another identity flashing briefly in the scramble suit before being quickly replaced. At its best, like on his chart-topping single "The Box," his vocal range can make a song crackle with unpredictable energy.
The sensation of Roddy Ricch in early 2020 was a beautiful thing. As his debut album had pop stars on their knees, it was the confirmation of the out-of-the-box superstardom Ricch had from the beginning. He had just two mixtapes prior to his major-label deal, and enjoys a relatively concise solo discography he seems resistant to saturate. Adding another chapter to the catalogue just before the year's end, he also enjoys having the 2021's biggest album release this side of Adele.
