Weezer fans understand the band hasn’t exactly been matching its past achievements of late. While Alone is a big ol’ mishmash of varying quality, it is, for the time being, the closest any of us will get to Cuomo’s former songwriting charm. A few of the songs, like his cover of Ice Cube’s The Bomb, are lacklustre and unnecessary at best. But demos from Cuomo’s discarded “space opera,” Songs From The Black Hole, which is pre-Pinkerton gold, as well as detailed liner notes by the singer, are a big treat.
