Whilst 2019's 'And Now for the Whatchamacallit' was recorded amidst a chaotic schedule of live performances around the world, 2020 and the pause in normality granted them a new, calmer life in which to write this new instalment. Such a drastic juxtaposition of environments has led to these unwavering complexities to weave through the collection, creating something worthy of the weird and wonderful Psychedelic Porn Crumpets name. Singles 'Mr.
Judging by the torrent of enthusiastic inventiveness on this record, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets appear to have been drinking from the same spiked classic rock chalice that has been fuelling the aural outpourings of their fellow countrymen King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Bolstered by one killer Monkees chorus after another, they leapfrog giddily with abandon from tune to tune, barely drawing breath over the course of its aggressively shaved 40-minute run time. Amidst the squall is a clear debt to the stomping glam of T-Rex and there are more than a few fleeting glimpses of Led Zeppelin's boundless hoary mysticism.
Just as their name might suggest, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are, for the most part, a pretty 'out there' sort of band. Bringing up the rear from their feverish Australian counterparts, the way for hypersonic, psychedelia-soaked garage rock has long been paved by a growing list of benchmark guitar outfits, with fanatical cult favourites, Pond and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard still reaching new legions of fans just as rapidly as they manage to churn out records. Hoping to catch up with the frontrunners, 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound' sets its sights on something larger by dressing up fuzzy, high-intensity pop songs into ambitious prospects of sold-out stadium performances.
Formed in 2014, the Perth quintet have subsequently created all kinds of weirdness and psychotic fuzz in their deceptively concise and punchy sonic warfare. Their 4th record SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound continues to bring their ever-evolving psychedelic sound to new heights. SHYGA is undoubtedly the Crumpet's fastest-paced album to date with 14 tracks flying by with propelling force in just over 40 minutes - a stark contrast from their earlier records containing some 6-8-minute slower paced tracks.
