Last year, Peter Van Hoesen released sophomore full-length Perceiver on his Time to Express imprint. Idiosyncratic and edgy, the LP stretched the not-so-taut boundaries of techno, representing a leap forward for the Belgian producer. Fast-forward to 2013 and Van Hoesen's follow-up, Life Performance, finds him improvising in a live setting at Berlin's Tresor club.
Electronic music is currently awash with producers keen to generate unpredictable imperfections in their work. One-take, no-overdubs sessions using hardware (not computers), "live" dance music, the corroded output of a label like L.I.E.S—these are the touchstones for a significant body of new producers. They still use laptops, but only to send their emails.Life Performance shows Belgian techno artist Peter Van Hoesen trying this approach.
