“After the dream you are awake,” coo pacificUV’s Suny Lyons and Laura Solomon on the opening track of the Athens group’s newest offering. It’s a sentiment so central to their new collection of songs that they actually named the album after it. But if you think they’re referring to a waking up from their 2012 release Weekends’ lonely, pill-popping waking dream—well, they’re not.
Athens, Georgia space rock institution Pacific UV take a decided turn toward pop on fourth album After the Dream You Are Awake. Their 2012 long-player, Weekends, hinted at a move in this direction over its diverse set list, embracing moments of high-production melodramatic pop amidst its more dreamy instrumental pieces and sprawling space rock missions. The nine tracks here eschew the band's more free-flowing forms for the most part, offering up a much more tightly focused look at the brittle electronic side of their work.
Sometimes, it only takes a year. In early 2012, Georgia-based pacificUV released its third album Weekends, a work as promising as it is maddening. It contains one of 2012’s best pop singles in “Funny Girl”, whose sprightly arpeggiator melody rivals M83’s lauded “Midnight City” in sheer catchiness. Unfortunately, the rest of Weekends didn’t follow suit.
