Straight from the opening track, listeners get a sense that the spiritual gravitas Nakhane brings to his music is far from conventional. The South African artist, author and musician mines past outward and inward conflicts, with his sexuality and his Christian fundamentalist upbringing, in visceral, explorative fashion. Genre-wise, Nakhane is nonchalant, standing tall on a gospel and soul foundation and subsuming art pop and electro vibes to radiate a performative, intimate sensation. Nakhane's music is driven by defiance. Growing up gay in a strict Christian household in South Africa, 'You Will Not Die' screams of a release from pent-up feelings. They're transmitted gorgeously, with hints of the regal majesty of Wild Beasts and the tenderness of Perfume Genius. Lead single 'Clairvoyant' is a shiny, dancefloor-bound stomper, while highlight 'Presbyteria' circles around an earworm of a whispered vocal hook.
