Buy oh my from Amazon
Bringing together singer Nadia Hulett with Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader of Ava Luna, oh my is the debut LP of indie pop trio NADINE. With a restrained, jazz-inflected sophistication that can evoke '70s jazz-rock and the softer side of Laurie Anderson, at least in passing moments, the group steers clear of Ava Luna's more vivid sound. Here, playful reflection and understatement reign on a set of 11 songs that still challenge expectation.
Nadia Hulett has spent years searching for the best environment for her minimalist lyrics to thrive. Many first heard her waxing hazily poetic as a member of chillwave group Phantom Posse; in 2015, she released a solo EP, i’m your protector now, where strong storytelling got lost in dream-pop swirls. Now, after forming the experimental art-pop group NADINE with Julian Fader and Carlos Hernandez of Ava Luna, she’s found the backing momentum needed to highlight her songwriting voice.
Recorded over two years, first in Brooklyn and then briefly in the idyllic setting of Dripping Springs, a small town near Austin, Texas, ‘oh my’ is the ethereal, wistful debut album of pop trio NADINE. Led by singer Nadia Hulett, with support from Ava Luna’s Julian Fader and Carlos Hernandez, the group has produced a body of work exploring such themes as the echoes of childhood religiosity into adulthood, and the nature of connection in a hyper-linked, but strangely atomised, world. Playful indie-pop is the order of the day for much of the record’s eleven tracks.
