How the Music Critic Score works
After the paranoid tendencies of Murray’s Revenge and the lackluster, politically charged Murs for President, Murs teamed up with his old pal, 9th Wonder, for a spirited full-length that harks back to the days of 3:16: The 9th Edition. Maybe it’s because it was recorded in L.A., on Murs’ home coast, or due to the fact that the two have a brotherly chemistry that lends itself to wisecracking good times, but Murs sounds reinvigorated and -- for the first time in a while -- glad to be where he is as a rapper. Instead of wasting time boasting or targeting adversaries, Murs concentrates solely on storytelling.
If it weren't for the promise to release an additional nine records this year, Murs' first 2010 offering, ForNever, might look like a foreboding back-to-the-drawing-board exercise. After his lukewarm major-label bid Murs for President in 2008, it makes a lot of sense to see the diehard Californian calling on an old friend to help get him back into a headspace that produced some of the rapper's strongest records to date. 9th Wonder-- a producer's gold standard for understated, laid-back cool-- is back for a fourth time helming the entirety of a Murs project.
“Murs is Better Than Your Favorite Rapper” was a bumper sticker for sale briefly somewhere between Murs’ first two collaborations with producer 9th Wonder, Murs 3:16 (2004) and Murray’s Revenge (2006). At the time, with maybe a few big-name MC exceptions, the statement might have been pretty damn true. So I bought one and threw it on my truck.
