On opener "Kindness," orchestral synths and ebullient beats conjure a blend of swagger and feel-goodness. Replete with an empowering message re: traversing "the valley of regret," "Live to Survive" features a sublime chorus that, in an alternate universe, is offered night after night to thousands of ecstatic fans, glowing cell phones held high. With "Cool to Cry," Ørsted broadens her audial range, revelling in glitch-y/riff-y nu-metal sonics.
One of the cool things about Danish singer/songwriter MØ is that she gives a feeling of the avant-garde to every song she appears on. Her delivery has a paradoxically disaffected energy to it, and her third album Motordrome showcases this on radio-friendly tunes with quirky production. With Kindness the album gets off to the strongest start possible, as a violin ostinato accompanies an earworm hook and booming bass.
MØ has never been an artist to second guess. Ostensibly a pop queen yet with deep roots in the Danish DIY punk scene, she's been able to move from soul-baring torch songs to viral Major Lazer partnerships without blinking an eye. 'Motordrome' presents another pivot - this time to disco diva, it aspires towards heavenly Studio 54 decadence, yet at times its reach exceeds its grasp.
