Texan modern-folk-rock outfit raise the bar on sixth album, equal parts quiet enchantment and bold dynamism We last heard from Denton, Texas-based modern-folk-rock outfit Midlake back in 2022 when they released their fifth album For The Sake Of Bethel Woods. It was their first album in almost a decade and saw them tentatively finding their feet again after a period away. It was an impressive return that featured all of the hallmarks of their sound and it clearly had a re-energising effect given that its follow-up A Bridge To Far has arrived only a couple of years later (the 'to' in the album's name is deliberately misspelled, a subtle allusion towards the transportive qualities of their music, and music in general, rather than to any shortcoming implied by that term).
In 2022, Midlake returned after almost a decade with For The Sake Of Bethel Woods, a record spurred by a longing to reconvene with cherished fragments - from people to ideals - of the past. A quicker turnaround ushers in A Bridge To Far, which in many ways arrives as its predecessor's natural follow-up. Hybrids of reflective gratitude and driving determination underpin the record's reflections on time, hope and constancy, where the demands of the present seem more salient than the ghosts of the past.
