Alt.country is so established now it's no longer alt.anything. This album joins recent records by, among others, the Czars and Iron and Wine, in pulling off the tricksy feat of twisting into new shapes what is often derided as the most conservative of musical forms. The backstory for this debut (involving a Vogue model, copious drugs, penury etc) could be the plot of a Jim Jarmusch movie and, yes, that is Tennessee native Hinson's real name.
