"This Album Is Packed With Gun Sounds, Grams OF Coke And Dead Cops. The Perfect Soundtrack For Mobbing On A Dark Halloween Night"—That's how Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All duo MellowHype's album BLACKENDWHITE was introduced on Tumblr when it was released on Halloween three years ago. With its creepy cover, jarring beats and frequently sinister content, it was, in the true spirit of the holiday, a release engineered to be scary.
Three years since their rise towards prominence, evidence suggests Odd Future is yet another camp whose shine risks being dimmed by nepotism that rewards underachievers on the merits of mere affiliation. Whether lack of preparation for glory, charisma, or drive has been to blame, their only Rap act with a considerable measure of stardom remains energetic commander Tyler, The Creator. At a prior point, similar lofty expectations were held for MellowHype (comprised of producer Left Brain and crude stoner emcee Hodgy Beats) given the pair’s capacity to stir up a frenzy amongst hardcore followers, but crew underdog Domo Genesis has recently forged ahead with an insistent need for his high octane hunger to go recognized.
Boy, these MellowHigh lads reeeally love their green stuff. They’re not coy about it either. You can’t go 30 seconds on their self-titled debut proper without them making references or just flat-out discussing their cannabinoid fixation; it roughly translates to sheer obsession. When they’re not getting high, or more precisely, when they’re not just getting high, MellowHigh make music.
The first human sound on MellowHigh’s debut album sounds like someone dry-heaving. Actually, it’s Domo Genesis jumping throat-first into the sludgy beat-fix Goon’n, relying on half-barked zingers to snap the listener to attention. Domo is the man who has turned Odd Future off-shoot MellowHype (Left Brain and Hodgy Beats) into MellowHigh.
Who is MellowHigh? Easy enough: It’s the not-that-new combination of producer/rapper duo Left Brain and Hodgy Beats with an always game Domo Genesis. But really, who is MellowHigh? We know what they were a few years back. Domo Genesis played the entertaining, but not all that impressive smoker on his 2010 mixtape Rolling Papers, while MellowHype had their agenda laid out on 2010’s haunting BlackenedWhite.
