Album Review: Tomorrow's Daughter by Matthew Sweet

Very Good, Based on 1 Critic

Rolling Stone - 70
Based on rating 3.5/5

More than three decades have passed since Matthew Sweet broke out of Athens, Georgia with pining alt-rock songs about bad romances. Judging from his 13th LP, he still appears to be most comfortable writing about shitty, unworkable relationships (even though he's settled down and married). There's the lovers he's unable to leave in "I Belong to You" and "Out of My Misery," a woman he's affectionately dubbed "Lady Frankenstein" ("I can love you with his heart," he sings somewhat morbidly, "I will hold you in his arms") and the quixotic "Girl With Cat," a seemingly imaginary girlfriend with whom he can fall asleep and be free of care for "18 hours a day" (y'know, like a cat).
