Album Review: Tall Tales by Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke

Exceptionally Good, Based on 3 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 90
Based on rating 9/10

He's forged an elusive yet mainstay presence in production and creative pacts ranging between techno and global influences, alongside formative links with genre linchpins such as Aphex Twin. Yorke's collaboration with Pritchard represents the former's Warp debut and one that plays to their respective artistic spheres, having previously crossed paths via the latter's record Under The Sun back in 2016 and a remix of The King of Limbs-era track "Bloom". Tall Tales covers familiar socio-political turf for the Radiohead frontman, zeroing in on the fables dutifully told from an early age as a vehicle to assuage untamed emotions and passions - torn with its application to the modern climate.

The highly acclaimed British creatives unite for a cohesive, atmospheric record that is by turns moody, enveloping, and surreal Almost 25 years ago Radiohead announced a change in direction with their Kid A album: electronic arrangements, abstract structures that reduced the importance of lyrics and melodies, a wilful disregard for the rock band setup that had taken them to stardom. This expanding of creative horizons paid huge dividends and paved the way, via a variety of solo and collaborative works, for its lead singer Thom Yorke to now release an electronic album with Mark Pritchard, of Africa HiTech and Shaft fame. While Tall Tales was produced in a loose, freeform manner, it has distinct sonic hallmarks.

Opinion: Excellent

Thom Yorke's projects tend to share things in common: they're distinctly "Thom Yorke" and at the same time entirely outside of the realms of expectation. Meanwhile, Mark Pritchard remains prolific but generally under the radar, contributing essential elements of sound and style to many and varied projects while rarely taking the limelight. The result of Yorke and Pritchard teaming up again (the electronic artist contributed two remixes of Radiohead’s 'Bloom' to a 2011 collection , and worked with Yorke on the song 'Beautiful People' in 2016 ) is 'Tall Tales': a sometimes otherworldly, frequently tongue-in-cheek, and occasionally surprisingly punchy album.
