i want to rearrange you Big Sigh feels familiar. Familiarity is a strange concept: in spite of its positive connotations, inherently negative feelings like pain and anxiety are highly familiar to most of us - and yet, familiarity seems desirable. From its very first track, Marika Hackman's new album is tangibly comfortable navigating such contrasting feelings, even if this comfort is derived from years of discomfort.
Photo by Steve Gullick Marika Hackman's "No Caffeine" is a cool temperature frenzy, stylish and poised and clinging to a ledge by its fingernails. The artist sings with a clean, uninflected purity about COVID lockdown induced psychosis, her voice a balm but the lyrics anything but soothing. "Occupy your mind, don't stay home/Talk to all your friends, but don't look at your phone/Scream into a bag, try to turn your brain off/ Make an herbal tea, don't throw up," she chants, serene despite the agitated pulse of bass, the skittery angst of snare that push the song forward.

Marika Hackman has really been through it. By the end of new album 'Big Sigh' - her first proper studio album in almost five years - you've experienced break-ups, grief, survival, and no small degree of teardrops. It's little wonder she's opted for that title - by the climax of this emotional rollercoaster, 'Big Sigh' is the only form of communication that satisfies.
