Laufey's long-awaited third album is a storybook of hidden truths and time's curse. The opening chimes of Clockwork signal our return to Laufey Land. Through twisting fairytales, we see past facades. The rosy Lover Girl fades into Snow White, where beauty standards are dissected through this fairytale icon.
Impacting with Typical of Me (2022), her debut extended play, Laufey captured critics and record buyers alike. Then over the next three years, she continued developing her sound - rich and sonorous - across another triptych of EPs, two live albums, and a pair of acclaimed full-length studio efforts, Everything I Know About Love (2022) and Bewitched (2023). These discs consolidated additional reviewer praise and grew her reach on the charts.
One might be excused for thinking Laufey has become disillusioned with the glamorous life. The 14 tracks on her latest album, A Matter of Time, suggest that neither love nor money, fame nor beauty, are what they seem. The singer’s persona accepts these facts of life, but she finds a silver lining in her cloudy existence. Laufey is no misanthrope.
With a sound that straddles vocal jazz, pop and classical music, Laufey has become something of a sensation in recent years. Her ethereal sound feels like it could have been lifted from the 1950s/60s but also sounds strikingly contemporary. She returns with her third LP, ‘A Matter Of Time’, which sees her collaborating with producers Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner of The National fame who has also worked with Taylor Swift.
