Album Review: The Bible by Lambchop

Excellent, Based on 2 Critics

Kurt Wagner’s sixteenth release sees him ploughing his own furrow, producing yet another unvarnished gem of a record Lambchop have come a long way since the days when they were dubbed the epitome of modern Americana with albums like Nixon and Is A Woman back in the early 2000s. Kurt Wagner, Lambchop’s creative mastermind, has always been a restless, prolific artist and with The Bible being his sixteenth studio release, he shows no sign of slowing down. The Bible continues the foray into experimental electronica that 2016’s FLOTUS album delved into, but there’s so many ideas and genres explored that it becomes almost dizzying to listen to.

Opinion: Very Good

Kurt Wagner's 16th album as Lambchop ruminates on things, distilling epiphany from introspection and atmosphere and, as he put it in "His Song Is Sung," "loose, abstracted thought." The songs don't tell stories, so much as suggest their existence. Who slumps in a home office chair late at night? Who watches a ballgame, popcorn lodged in shoes? It's not clear that it's Wagner, or even any flesh-and-blood person within his orbit. His songs flash by in vivid, disconnected mental images, floating on an underlying current of mood.
