The Aussie psych-rockers have taken their synapse fryer off the hob - and the result is is their most accessible and immediate album to date When it comes to neo-psych, there's something in the water Down Under. Those cosmic scene kings, Perth's Tame Impala , just headlined Coachella, while neighbours Pond recently returned with a belter of an album, 'Tasmania'. For the real brain-bending stuff though, it's prolific genre mashers King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard who sit at the really wild end of the spectrum.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard make records that can be described like Friends episodes: "The One With Microtonal Instruments"; "The One They Released for Free"; "The One that Loops Infinitely"; "The One That Features Mild High Club"; "The One With a Ton of Acoustic Instruments." Their latest, Fishing For Fishies, or "The One Where They Tried to Make a Blues Record," doesn't have as glamourous a gimmick as past efforts. But the band's energy, songwriting and mischievous instinct haven't gone anywhere, resulting in a worthwhile entry ….
After taking a break from releasing new albums for over a year, the always entertaining, often brilliant King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard returned in 2019 with Fishing for Fishies, a blues-inspired recording that is their most accessible album since 2015's Paper Mâché Dream Balloon and a continuation of their deliriously warped exploration of the sonic cosmos. They've shelved the microtonal instruments, shut down the synths (for the most part), and dialed down their ambitions in favor of laid-back, rambling tunes that feature pianos, gentle vocals, acoustic instruments, and lots of both blues and fancy harp. It's not exactly a step back from the epic albums they had been cranking out, but it seems like they were ready to do something a little more relaxed and mellow.
Even after releasing a mere five albums in 2017, it would be wrong for the ever-prolific 'Gizzard to have taken too much time off, wouldn't it? It'd have been almost offensive too, if the Aussie psyche-rockers hadn't released something as curious and unexpected as this to follow up to that gargantuan year. 'Fishing for Fishies' sees the band incalculably balance a distinctly upbeat mixture of hand-clapping Suzi Quatro glam, pastiche blues, and 'Rumours'-era Fleetwood Mac soft rock, also negotiating dreamy harp flourishes and space-y electronica wanderings in the meantime. A false-start snare-roll opening is just the first of many surprises.
Sleeping giants can't rest forever, right? Wrong. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are a year and a half removed from releasing five albums over the span of a single year, but after taking a break in 2018, King Gizzard could not contain themselves any longer. Unfortunately for this prolific septet of psychedelic weirdos, their latest LP Fishing For Fishies suggests they should have dedicated a bit more time toward slumbering, or at the very least--fleshing out a record far more interesting than this.
