The sometime Pixies star’s long-awaited and perfectly crafted debut solo album is full of surprises Black Francis may have been the face (and scream) of the Pixies since their inception in 1986, but for any long-term fans, Kim Deal was always the beating heart of the band. It surely can’t be any coincidence that, since their comeback without Deal, no new Pixies release has managed to hold a candle to albums like Surfer Rosa, Doolittle or Trompe Le Monde. Since quitting Pixies for a second time in 2013, Deal reformed The Breeders but has mostly spent the last decade working on Nobody Loves You More, her first ever official solo album.
Solo is a crucial word here as Deal always seems to function best in collaboration with others. Nobody Loves You More has been incubating across different studios since 2011 with several old friends including Slint's Brit Walford, Ray McGinley from Teenage Fanclub, Jack Lawrence, Josh Klinghoffer, and many more. Some material has been siphoned off here and there for other projects, including the welcome return of The Breeders for All Nerve in 2018, featuring the band's 'classic lineup' of Deal's twin sister Kelley, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson.
Kim Deal, along with her bandmates in both Pixies and The Breeders, played a crucial role in the explosive growth of 'alternative' music, which saw groups formed in garages and basements suddenly performing at festivals and in sold-out arenas all over the world. On her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, Deal delivers a cool nod of her head to the various eras of her five decade-spanning career across 11 tidy tracks, from the sun-kissed beach pop of Coast, to the foot-stomping college rock of Disobedience. Her long-time friend and frequent collaborator, the late Steve Albini plays a noticeable influence on the album's sound too, whether it be the industrial bite of the bass on Big Ben Beat, or the dense crash of the drums on Come Running.
So iconic an indie rock figure is Kim Deal in her own right that it feels like some trick of the mind that this, at the age of 63, is her first full-length solo record. She threw herself whole-heartedly into bringing back The Breeders after her departure from the Pixies' fold a decade ago, and the Dayton band's comeback record, 'All Nerve', suggested her songwriting chops had not abandoned her. 'Nobody Loves You More', though, feels like a different beast entirely; ambitious and stylistically varied, it demonstrates new sides to Kim both musically and thematically.
