The Glasgow songwriter’s fourth album is an intense, haunting listen. The raw emotion is something to behold Over the course of three albums, Kathryn Joseph has built up a reputation as a real songwriter of note. All three of her albums have been minimally produced, and usually just feature Joseph backed by a piano. Her songs are mysterious, eerie and, sometimes, impossibly fragile.
That said, compared to previous outings, her voice is more nuanced. Lyrically, she's more image-heavy, crafting metaphors that accentuate the savage aspects of human life. Producer Lomond Campbell, who steered 2022's for you who are the wronged, plays a key role, facilitating soundscapes that oscillate between the earthy and celestial, the austere and noisy.
It's been ten years since Kathryn Joseph won The SAY Award and now WE WERE MADE PREY. is here. Can we still say 'wow'? The evolution in Joseph's work is restless and searching. This release is no different as it serves us another intuitive and unexpected turn in her style, instrumentation and vocals.
