How the Music Critic Score works
Rapper Kanye West has dropped Donda 2. HipHopDX breaks down Kanye West’s new album Donda 2. It's impossible to watch Kanye West's Donda 2 rollout without harkening back to the chaos of 2021. The disjointed and messy rollout of Donda, marked by bloated listening parties featuring alleged domestic abuser Marilyn Manson and the controversial DaBaby, plagued the album's final product.
In a world where fans have waited nearly five years for a follow-up to Kendrick Lamar's Pulitzer Prize-winning DAMN. or close to two decades for an André 3000 solo effort, there was something oddly freeing about the rollout of Kanye West's Donda sequel. Barely letting the dust settle after its chart-topping predecessor, V2.22.22 MIAMI -- the current release of the album otherwise known as Donda 2 -- is a noticeably unfinished album. It's only officially available on Ye's own Stem Player device, where listeners can manipulate the tracks to their liking.
Ye's journey, up until this point, is currently being aired on Netflix in the Jeen-Yuhs documentary, but the short-hand version is one of a shooting star - an arc of grace/disgrace, vulnerability/impenetrability. His career undoubtedly climaxing with the gargantuan and luxurious My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and the pressure-point exploration of Yeezus, ever since it's been a breadcrumb trail avoiding the way home. Donda was to be a project that brought Ye from the darkness, while paying homage to his late mother.
