Album Review: Twilight Override by Jeff Tweedy

Great, Based on 4 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 80
Based on rating 8/10

If that's the case, the seemingly limitlessly prolific Wilco leader and songwriter's fifth solo album must be making a sizable dent to the not exactly small reserves of gloom, misery and fear currently circulating our planet: at 30 songs, the triple album is an almost foolhardily generous offering. The more you listen and overcome the initial overwhelm that such a huge slab of music can initially trigger, the harder it becomes to find an ounce of flab on Twilight Override. Tweedy's previous solo records have felt like impromptu opportunities to let off steam and indulge in songwriterly idiosyncrasies away from the more carefully constructed templates and elevated expectations that accompany the making of a Wilco record.

Under The Radar - 70
Based on rating 7/10

Jeff Tweedy's first solo release since 2020 is a long one. Twilight Override is billed as a triple album and clocks in at just under two hours. With each of its parts loosely dedicated to the past, present, and future, there are 30 songs spread over that expanse. For die-hard fans this could be viewed as extremely generous, but for the more casual Tweedy/Wilco fan it may be a bit much.

Clash Music
Opinion: Excellent

As a member of art-rock outfit Wilco, Jeff Tweedy has been a key alternative rock figure for the past 30 years. He now returns with his fifth solo LP and first since 2020, ‘Twilight Override’. It is by far one of the largest projects he has undertaken at 30 tracks, a triple LP. It is ambitious and is his response to being overwhelmed by the state of the world at present.

Record Collector
Opinion: Excellent

Five years after Covid-era restorative Love Is The King, Jeff Tweedy ups the ante to face down escalating crises. Expansive and intimate, Twilight Override is a triple-LP set of reflections on time, selfhood and modern anxieties, warmed from within by Tweedy's weathered voice and close collaborators (his kids included). One Tiny Flower sets the mood in push-pull snapshots of mortality and resilience, forged through the pavement's cracks.
