Debut solo album by Little Mix singer is packed with incident and a multitude of musical styles Are today's girl group graduates much more adventurous in their music? When looking at the legacy of Spice Girls and All Saints members, the music has stood up well but rarely sticks its head above the parapet. Nearly three decades on, the story is familiar. Each member of Little Mix have proved themselves as talented vocalists, yet have arguably played it safe in their transitions from group to soloist.
Since the release of her debut single in the summer of 2024, Thirwall's rise has been one for the books. She's achieved what her Little Mix co-stars haven't quite perfected yet by avoiding the realm of cringe, and in doing so she's maintained a sense of excitement and individuality in her releases. We've also seen her on tactically relevant tracks, appearing alongside Confidence Man on the early 00s inspired "gossip" and with Kesha on a revisited version of "BOY CRAZY".
If it feels like this, the debut solo album from JADE - aka former Little Mixer, Gallagher mocker and national hun Jade Thirlwall - has been a long time coming, it's because, well, it has. Announcing her as the single most exciting name in topline pop (bar, perhaps, Chappell Roan and Charli), lead single 'Angel Of My Dreams' first descended over a year ago, its madcap exploration of fame's double-edged sword a show-stopping demonstration of her artistic ambition. And that was just the start: since then, the South Shields singer has kept everyone - fans and critics alike - well and truly on their toes, dropping appetite-whetting tracks that ran the gamut from pulsing, hot and heavy club numbers ('IT girl'; 'Midnight Cowboy') to Lady Gaga-esque melodrama ('FUFN') and funk-flecked grooves ('Fantasy').
