Jacob Alon's passion for music started with the discovery of an acoustic guitar that had been stowed away in their grandmother's dusty cupboard. But Alon's route to recording their debut album was more circuitous than it might have been. A commitment to music was preceded by unrewarding stints at medical school and the study of theoretical physics. Ventures pursued, Alon later reflected, to the benefit of others rather than themselves.
All-consuming feelings of unrequited love which result in becoming unrecognisable; the physical ache that manifests from longing; mourning something that is still very much alive; wielding nostalgia as a blunt force weapon; fighting off a partially self-induced illness in an attempt to gain closure or even acknowledgement: these are but a few of the places Jacob Alon visits in the centre of debut full-length, 'In Limerence'. As its title suggests, Jacob's experience of heartbreak and longing colour much of the record, as well as their emotive guitar style on tracks such as 'August Moon'. 'Confession' sees the Fife singer-songwriter strip their queer shame to the bone with a vocal turn that beckons in a similar manner to Jeff Buckley, soulful yet haunting.
Every so often a talent comes along who stops you so utterly in your tracks that it's almost impossible to imagine ever moving again. Jacob Alon is one such talent - transcendentally beautifully, their folk tapestries move between the angelic and the carnal, the mournful and the ecstatic, a work of true communion. Debut album 'In Limerence' is an extraordinary achievement, a record that truly picks the listener up in one place, and deposits them in another.
