A band that doesn't so much bend genres as smash them together and play in the pieces, Iwrestledabearonce continue to show why they're one of the most exciting groups in experimental metal with their third album, Late for Nothing. The first album to feature new singer Courtney LaPlante, who stepped in after Krysta Cameron departed in 2012, Late for Nothing finds the band not missing a step despite losing an integral member, as LaPlante ably fills the rather formidable vacancy left by Cameron. If there's any change at work here, it's that the album's overall tone feels a bit more serious than the band's earlier, more playful efforts.
IWABO’s beloved frontwoman Krysta Cameron left to have a baby and run her Etsy shop, probably the only time in metalcore history that a band’s vocalist has done so. Courtney LaPlante makes a more-than-capable substitute on the band’s third album, but IWABO are a band that prizes change for its own sake, anyway. They’re shapeshifters who see no reason why jazz, grindcore, electronica, and delicate pop melodies can’t coexist.
Iwrestledabearonce is back with a new lead singer and a streamlined sound. Former vocalist Krysta Cameron left the band to have a baby in 2012 and opted not to return. Courtney LaPlante ably fills her shoes, though, bringing the intense screaming and guttural vocals common to metal as well as soaring melodic singing. As for that streamlined sound, the band still throws in elements of many different subgenres of heavy metal and hard rock, but the wilder stylistic departures that marked a lot of their earlier material are mostly absent on Late for Nothing.
