Album Review: Weed Garden [EP] by Iron & Wine

Very Good, Based on 2 Critics

Pitchfork - 70
Based on rating 7.0/10

Let's start at the end of Iron & Wine's new EP, Weed Garden. As the final verse of the final song, "Talking to Fog," reaches its climax, Sam Beam offers a vivid description of happiness. It's a place "where our memories of singing fill the air above our heads" and "the faces of our family and friends go on and on." With each line, his delivery grows faster and more insistent, until the words spill out of his mouth and he sounds more like a soothsayer than a folk singer.

Weed Garden was recorded during the tour for 2017's Beast Epic. Sam Beam had a few songs left over from the writing sessions for the record that he didn't want to go to waste, so he took the band into the studio and put them on tape. Capturing the same homey, acoustic sound that gave Beast Epic its warm, comforting feel, the six-song EP proves that Beam was right not to let the songs wither on the vine.
