This short, sharp blast of refreshing energy finds James Newell Osterberg Jr as compelling as ever You could be forgiven for thinking that Iggy Pop had decided to settle into his role as ‘respected elder statesman of rock’. These days, at the age of 75, he’s a respected broadcaster on BBC 6Music, and his recent albums have been more relaxed than raucous. Indeed, on 2019’s Free, there was an unexpected focus on poetry recitals, albeit poems written by Lou Reed.
Iggy Pop is 75. Just consider that for a moment. No one is more surprised than him that he's still making tough, pissed off rock music. The fact that it's also damn good is a blessing. Every Loser is a sampler platter of Iggy through the ages, starting off with the visceral fuzztone crunch of ….
"I got a dick and two balls," roars Iggy over the opening thrash of Frenzy, "so shut up and love me!" It's a long way from the Dylan Thomas recitations of 2019's Free, where he shimmied out of the rock cage in which, in his words, he'd become "encased over time". Well, Iggy's id is back, the musings on mortality are (sometimes) parked, and at 75 he's hurling himself around with wanton disregard for niceties, turning up the guitars, swearing liberally and imploring, "Give me a try before I fuckin' die." On, for example, the ferocious two-minute blaze of Neo Punk, he's exhibiting the life force with such conviction that his spontaneous closing cackle of "heh heh heh… all right!" is the only review possible. Funtime. And yet.
No one can do it like Iggy Pop does it. 19 albums into his solo career, the punk godfather remains an iconoclastic voice, raising the temperature of every room he cares to visit. Someone who long ago distilled rock 'n' roll elixir down to its finest, most potent formula, it's to his credit that Iggy has developed such a wide-ranging solo catalogue; 2019's 'Free' for instance, was almost ambient in its glacial beauty.
