How the Music Critic Score works
What happens when a dance-punk band gets its heart broken? Apparently, a record like this. The Canadian rockers have taken a sharp turn toward Sadville on Happiness Ltd., their third release, a lyrical ode to singer Steve Bays’ romantic woes. Don’t confuse Sadville, however, with its neighbor, Bummertown. The booming choruses, expansive melodies, and serrated guitar lines of the band’s past remain — only now they’re accompanied by Edgar Allan Poe-faced couplets like ”Happiness is limited/But misery has no end.” And that misery deserves company.
