Page Hamilton drags Helmet kicking and screaming (in a good way) in to 2010 While there are some who would argue Helmet’s prime time was in the heady days from 92’s ‘Meantime’ to 97’s swan song ‘Aftertaste’, since guitar-toting frontman Page Hamilton dragged Helmet's filthy carcass back into action in 04, there have been some fine moments. ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ is undoubtedly one of them, despite Hamilton’s man on-the-edge vocal sounding rougher than a hobo who has not only necked the meths, but the bottle it came in. Featuring the classic, jagged and tar thick riffery and off-beat timing that have become Helmet’s signature, ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ is a grate (especially re the vocals) and gritty listen.
Page Hamilton and company seem to be stuck in a state of limbo. Alistair Lawrence 2010 Post-hardcore has become such a broad and muddled term, it almost doesn’t do Helmet justice to refer to them as one of its pioneers. Still, anyone who remembers their mix of choppy riffs, broken melodies and articulate aggression producing a string of seminal albums during the 90s would find it hard to reject that notion.
