Album Review: The Caretaker by Half Waif

Great, Based on 2 Critics

Exclaim - 80
Based on rating 8/10

On her latest album as Half Waif, Nandi Rose wonders down a triumphant journey within, lingering on supersaturated moments of her past through the lens of a different version of herself, one that is enlightened and wary of the necessary hardships. Rose's immaculate voice has an affectionate tone, comforting and nudging us along an array of hope in these disconcerting times. The Caretaker is crystal clear, vividly displaying Rose's seamless pop songwriting with a high theatrical value to match.

AllMusic - 70
Based on rating 7/10

Caretaker is the Anti- label debut for Half Waif, the project of Pinegrove keyboardist Nandi Rose Plunkett, and fourth album overall from the band (other members include Pinegrove drummer Zack Levine). Despite the label move, it's a follow-up both stylistically and thematically to 2018's Lavender, as it revisits themes of displacement, isolation, and connection. The act of being uprooted is a major influence and bittersweet legacy of the songwriter's family going back multiple generations: her grandmother was displaced following the Partition of India, and her mother was an Indian refugee from Uganda.
