Album Review: Transparent Things by Gia Ford

Great, Based on 4 Critics

The Skinny - 80
Based on rating 4/5

Transparent Things sets off with the unbridled swagger of Poolside - a blistering-hot opener punctuated by alluring rattlesnake shakes and dad-rock guitar flourishes - and settles into the hot-footed disco groove of Loveshot, an equally tantalising number which sets this album up to be one which runs on raw attitude. Ah, but this is not so, dear reader! Of course, the swampy sway of Alligator and gospel-y gait of Buzzing On You would only strengthen this kind of characterisation. But the vulnerable romance of Falling In Love Again and tactile tenderness of Don't Drown Me Out make for welcome detours in a collection of songs that is led so intensely by strut-worthy rhythms and that raw bad-boy edge.

The Line of Best Fit - 70
Based on rating 7/10

Transparent Things may not reinvent the wheel in terms of sonic language, but it does indeed cement Ford as the face of bringing old tradition to a new generation of listeners. Gia Ford had an interesting start to her musical career. Singed to taste-making indie label Dirty Hit, Ford released Poster Boy and Murder In The Dark; two ep's that showcased Ford's sophisti-pop influenced sound, as well as her knack for storytelling.

Clash Music
Opinion: Excellent

Sheffield-based Gia Ford plummets her way into the spotlight on the rock scene as the new, striking indie it-girl to watch. Gia Ford's debut album 'Transparent Things' follows on with an array of singles, showcasing an exploration of indie strings meeting a bedroom-pop style influence, following on from the 2020 lockdown. Like her previous singles, 'Transparent Things' opts to favour the atmospheric acoustic approach to song production that Ford has proved to stay loyal to throughout her discography, so far.

DIY Magazine
Opinion: Very Good

"I'm a ghost in daylight on a crowded street," broods Gia Ford on opener 'Poolside'; the perfect summation of her debut album. 'Transparent Things' sees the singer embodying a series of outsiders across varied sonic landscapes. She dabbles in macabre imagery: 'Falling in Love Again' paints the picture of a widowed man, asking his new partner to dress in his dead wife's clothes.
