Emily King's obstinate fortitude merits almost as much high regard as the music she makes with recording partner Jeremy Most. Signed to a major label in 2004, she didn't release her impressive if artistically restrictive debut album until three years later, and within a year of that was dropped despite being nominated for a Grammy. Only an EP and one additional LP followed through 2017, the year King struck a deal with the Universal-distributed ATO, a haven for other classification-defying singer/songwriters.

It's the time of year to wonder: What would happen if we packed up our shoes and moved to grassier pastures? If we got some fresh sunshine on our bones, would everything be warmer and sweeter? With her new album, Scenery, Emily King reports yes, with delicate murmurs and melty calypso rhythms. King just moved from the Lower East Side block she's lived on her whole life to Woodstock, got a car and some wind in her hair, like "one of those scenes from the '80s." Then she whipped around the next week and wrote "Remind Me," the stirring electro-R&B first song on Scenery. The album could be a daydream soundtrack for King's imaginary movie.

Emily King is a known entity in the music scene — she signed her first major record deal way back in 2004 — but superstar success has eluded her. Some notable singles here and there — 2015's album and title track Switch most recently — but with Scenery, she makes a statement.   Scenery reflects a decision to leave her NYC hometown for the rich greenery and wildlife of the Catskills. The move was a scary one for the self-described non-risk-taker, but one she felt necessary to grow both as person and artist.   Opening track ….
