Back in '92 Drop Nineteens were a glowing star in the small constellation of the British shoegaze scene. The catch being that the Boston natives were, of course, not British at all. Adhering to an American tradition of taking the music the English offered and serving it back to them with a new twist of cool, their shining debut album, Delaware, was an essential part of any UK Gen-Xer's CD pile.
While it was difficult for shoegaze-influenced bands in the U.S. to stand out in the early nineties, Boston's Drop Nineteens made a blip on the radar thanks to their debut, Delaware. Over thirty years after that release, the much-beloved cult act picks off right where they left off with an equally approachable sound compared to some of their peers.
Still gazey after all these years The last ten years have seen arguably the three biggest names in the original shoegaze scene reunite and release albums of new material (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, if it needs to be stated). Drop Nineteens' reemergence with the release with Hard Light fits into a trend, then, even if the Boston band is probably best classified within the second tier of the genre's '90s acts. This group's place in the shoegaze history (besides being one of the more significant American additions to the annals) rests almost entirely upon the shoulders of their 1992 debut LP, Delaware.
