Album Review: The Crux by Djo

Excellent, Based on 3 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 80
Based on rating 8/10

Penned under Djo, this track later found itself nominated for the Best International Song at this year's Brits - its wistful vocals and melancholic synths soundtracking TikTok's of every variety. With the rest of Djo's discography uncovered after this viral moment - two studio records and a delightful cornucopia of singles - his latest delve into psychedelic undertones awash with synth-laden soundscapes comes in the form of his third album, The Crux. Opening the album is "Lonesome Is A State Of Mind", a cut steeped in undeniable pop energy and funk that takes over from the track's subtler origins at the minute-and-a-half mark.

DIY Magazine
Opinion: Fantastic

Though he might be best known for his acting, that's by no means the only string Joe Keery has to his bow. A former member of psych-rockers Post Animal, the multi-hyphenate has been releasing music under the moniker Djo for years, notching up two synthy, electronic-led albums (2019's 'Twenty Twenty' and 2022's 'DECIDE') and one very viral song (the TikTok hit 'End Of Beginning'). His third solo outing, however, is something altogether more full-bodied - an ambitious, joyous, heartfelt collection that finds him revelling in analogue instrumentation, expansive arrangements, and unashamedly retro sonic touchstones.

Opinion: Excellent

Djo known equally as well under his name as acclaimed actor and musician. Born Joe Keery, the songwriter proves that the third time is a charm when resuming his melodic voyage on his latest album 'The Crux'. Djo, renowned for his electronic sound sparing ethereal synths amongst hazy keys, offering a modern take on psychedelic rock hosted amongst the rhythmic sensibilities of modern indie-pop, strives to add a sharp angle of edge to his already striking signature sound.
